Delta partners BRECAN for breast cancer awareness, early detection in Nigeria

Delta Air Lines has partnered with the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) to drive breast cancer awareness, promote early detection, and expand community education as part of activities marking October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The joint initiative, which aligns Delta’s corporate social responsibility values with BRECAN’s mission to combat the disease, culminated in a major awareness event held in Lagos on October 31, 2026. The program featured an awareness walk, interactive educational sessions, and firsthand experiences shared during a survivor engagement forum.

Participants learned about breast health, key warning signs, and the vital role of regular screenings and professional medical advice.

Speaking on the initiative, Mary Gbobaniyi, Delta Air Lines Manager for Sales in West Africa, highlighted the airline’s duty to its host communities.

“Delta believes that connecting people extends beyond transportation; it involves supporting the communities where we operate,” Gbobaniyi said. “Breast cancer impacts individuals, families, and communities. Increased awareness and early detection are critical steps toward improving outcomes.”

She added: “Our partnership with BRECAN allows us to support efforts that educate individuals, encourage prompt medical attention, and assure those affected by breast cancer that they have support.”

Also speaking at the event, BRECAN Founder and 29-year breast cancer survivor Dr Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu advocated for systemic reforms in Nigeria’s healthcare delivery.
She urged stakeholders to prioritise accessible diagnostics, affordable treatments, and comprehensive financial and psychosocial support for patients.

“Too many women still present at health facilities when their disease has reached an advanced stage,” Anyanwu-Akeredolu noted. “Too many families continue to experience avoidable suffering because of delayed diagnosis, misinformation, financial difficulties, and inadequate access to treatment.”

Emphasising that the fight against the disease extends past the designated awareness month, she added: “As we conclude another Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let us remember that breast cancer does not recognise the boundaries of October. Our advocacy, compassion, and commitment must therefore continue throughout the year.”

Breast cancer remains a major public health challenge globally and across Nigeria, where late presentation often negatively impacts outcomes. Through their joint campaign, Delta and BRECAN aim to break down pervasive social stigmas, dispel misconceptions, and encourage individuals to seek early clinical evaluation when changes occur.

Globally, Delta Air Lines maintains an active year-round commitment to breast cancer research and support. Key initiatives include flying its signature pink-and-white ‘Breast Cancer One’ aircraft, hosting employee-led fundraising campaigns, offering customer contribution channels via SkyMiles donations, and directly funding cancer research initiatives.

As Breast Cancer Awareness Month comes to a close, both organisations are urging individuals, families, and communities to maintain momentum, prioritise health screenings, and offer ongoing support to those navigating a diagnosis.
