Frequent failures: NAMA decommissions Lagos ILS cat 3 on 18R runway

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has decommissioned the category 3 Instrument Landing System (ILS) on Runway 18R at Lagos airport due to frequent unserviceability and constant complaints from air traffic controllers, pilots and the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
The system has been replaced with a new Normack category 2 ILS/DME to enhance reliability and operational efficiency.
ILS is a critical radio navigation system that provides short-range guidance for safe landings, particularly in low visibility conditions.
However, during a recent calibration exercise, the SELEX category 3 ILS at Lagos airport was downgraded to category 2 due to persistent failures, leading to concerns about its operational integrity.
Given the strategic importance of Lagos as one of Nigeria’s busiest and highest revenue-generating aerodromes, NAMA prioritized the installation of a new Normack category 2 ILS/DME on runway 18R at Lagos airport, enhancing reliability and operational efficiency.

The Director of Electronic Engineering Services (DEES), NAMA, Engr. Teresa Ihenachor stated that despite multiple repair efforts, the SELEX ILS category 3 continued to experience failures, prompting its complete decommissioning.
She further stated that the category of an ILS is influenced by the airfield lighting and runway classification, which are key factors in its effectiveness.
Ihenachor reassured stakeholders that the agency remains committed to upholding the highest standards of air navigation services, with a strong focus on safety, reliability and continuous system enhancements across Nigeria’s airports.
The NAMA director noted that the Abuja cat 3 ILS is working but has its own issue, stressing that what the agency plans to do is to use the spares from the one in Lagos to fix the one in Abuja.
