Buhari honours NAMA Director, Farouk Umar with national merit award on productivity

President Muhammadu Buhari has conferred on Director, Safety Electronics and Engineering Services of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Engr. Farouk Ahmed Umar with the prestigious honour of National Productivity Order of Merit Award (NPOM)

The award on Farouk Umar was based on the report of the National Productivity Order of Merit Award Committee after a rigorous selection process.

The honour was in recognition for his contributions towards the improvement of communication, navigation and surveillance (CNS) facilities in order to ensure safe and efficient traffic services in the Nigerian airspace.

In 2016, Farouk Umar was appointed as substantive Director, Safety, Electronics and Engineering Services (DEES), a position he is still occupying up to this present moment.

Born in Birnin-Kebbi, Kebbi State on January 18, 1964, Farouk Umar started his tertiary education at the Sokoto State Polytechnic, Sokoto and earned a National Diploma and Higher National Diploma 1985 and 1988 respectively.

He bagged Bachelor Engineering from the Federal University (FUT), Minna; Masters in International Affairs and Diplomacy from the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria; Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the Lagos State University.

Farouk Umar is a prolific and astute civil servant who took up the duty of achieving the mandate of his agency as soon as he was appointed Director, Safety, Electronics and Engineering Service. He is an exceptional engineer par excellence, a hardworking civil servant who determinedly bridged boundaries to create a new NAMA based on best practices and international standards.

Using his engineering acumen, he has put NAMA on the pedestal of being among one of the leading Air Navigation Service Providers in the world.

He ensured that the agency provides safe, efficient, effective and economic air navigation service to airspace users through his engineering know-how, application of new technology and dedication to duty.

Prior to the appointment of Farouk Umar as DEES, personnel of the Directorate were bedevilled with the challenges that had direct bearing on their productivity such as epileptic engineering trainings, inappropriate placement of staff nationwide, deficient acquisition of professional certification (ATSEP Licensing and Systems Rating).

Others are lack of implementation of approved air traffic safety engineering manual of operations and Standards operating procedures, low morale of the entire NAMA staff.

He has received several commendations and awards for his numerous contributions to the smooth running of his agency; a key Federal Government parastatal and by extension , the Federal public service, where over the years, he had shown a high sense of loyalty, due diligence unparalleled commitment to service and exemplary dedication to duty.
