An Air Peace B737 aircraft this morning aborted flight after the aircraft with flight number 4P7198 suffered burst tyres as the aircraft prepared for take-off at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.

The aircraft was departing for Abuja at 10.40 am when the incident happened. Passengers who were on-board said the aircraft was on top speed preparatory for take-off when the incident occurred. They disclosed that the captain of the aircraft made an announcement that the aircraft lost three tyres and appealed for calm from the passengers who were said to have panicked.

The passengers were all disembarked as they were put in another aircraft for their onward journey to Abuja.

Spokesman for the airline, Chris Iwara in a statement said at about 11am today, the Lagos-Abuja flight aborted take-off at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos when the pilot-in-command (PIC) suspected that there was an issue with one of the tyres of the aircraft.

Iwara explained that passengers on board were transferred to another aircraft to ensure they did not miss their appointments.

His words, “The passengers were all calm, as it was not a life-threatening incident. There was no question of air return as our very experienced flight crew noticed the development much before take-off. Because of the premium we place on safety, our pilots are under a duty to call for checks when they suspect any fault however basic it may be. That was what happened in this case.”

He stated that although it was initially suspected to be a case of burst tyre, but their engineering department later inspected the aircraft and confirmed that one of the tyres got deflated, adding the issue has since been addressed.

“We wish to assure our loyal customers, air travellers and the general public that we will continue to accord their comfort and safety top priority as we have maintained since commencement of our flight operations.
