Dual Honours for Olateru: Inducted into Aviation Hall of Fame, ITPN Cement Legacy of Excellence

The ambient hum inside Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2 (MMA2) in Lagos carried a distinct sense of occasion.

The afternoon honoured permanence and legacy, structured to honour the visionary architects of Nigeria’s skies.

Among the 18 distinguished aviation pioneers and industry leaders selected for the second induction ceremony of the Nigeria Aviation Hall of Fame (NAHOF), one figure drew sustained attention: Engr. Akinola Olateru.

Organised in strategic partnership with Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL), the ceremony unveiled a permanent wall of honour and legacy display within the terminal.

Designed as a lasting visual monument, the installation anchors Nigeria’s rich aerospace history directly into its modern transport infrastructure.

It celebrates individuals whose decades of unblemished service, integrity, and transformative contributions have redefined the nation’s civil aviation landscape.

For Olateru, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of OmniBlu Aviation, the ceremony was more than a formal ceremony; it was an enduring acknowledgement of a career that helped elevate Nigeria’s aerospace standing on the global stage.

Yet, this induction represented only one half of an extraordinary dual milestone. At the National Tourism Transport Summit and Expo (NTTS) in Abuja, Olateru was also inducted into the prestigious Body of Fellows of the Institute for Tourism Professionals of Nigeria (ITPN).

This fellowship, reserved for individuals of exceptional distinction, recognises those who have actively championed the institutionalisation and professionalisation of Nigeria’s tourism and allied transport sectors.

By securing both high honours virtually at once, Olateru underscored the profound, essential synergy connecting transport safety, passenger confidence, and sustainable economic growth.

Olateru’s trajectory reflects a deliberate, near four-decade commitment to technical mastery and strategic leadership.

Spanning over 37 years, his career touches virtually every operational and executive facet of the aerospace industry across Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and continental Europe.

His journey began on the tarmac and in the hangar, earning him the rare distinction of holding licensed aircraft maintenance engineer status across three major global aviation jurisdictions: Nigeria, the UK, and the USA.

Rather than remaining solely within engineering maintenance, Olateru recognised early that transforming complex aviation systems required a deep understanding of air transport management.

He pursued advanced academic rigours, obtaining an M.Sc. in Air Transport Management from City University, London.

Understanding that modern corporate and public leadership demands continuous refinement, he continuously expanded his executive toolkit.

He completed advanced programs at the London School of Economics and earned the prestigious Certificate of Management Excellence (CME) from Harvard Business School in Boston, USA.

This seamless blend of hands-on technical proficiency and top-tier strategic management prepared him to navigate and lead through periods of intense regulatory and operational change.

Olateru’s most visible impact on public policy unfolded during his tenure as the Director-General of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), formerly known as the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB).

Serving for over six transformative years, he inherited an agency facing significant operational backlogs and modernising hurdles.

Under his direct executive guidance, the bureau underwent a historic overhaul. Olateru prioritised the rapid, transparent release of accident investigation reports, upgraded technical flight data recovery laboratories, and forged collaborative safety partnerships with international regulatory bodies.

He fundamentally shifted the agency’s orientation from reactive post-incident analysis to proactive, preventative safety management.

This institutional shift dramatically enhanced airspace confidence for domestic operators and international commercial carriers alike.

His pioneering reforms earned widespread international acclaim. Over the course of his career, he has been admitted into some of the world’s most exclusive professional circles, becoming a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, UK (FRAeS); a Fellow of the UK Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (FCILT); a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE); and a member of the world-renowned international affairs think tank, Chatham House, UK. Industry media platforms, including Aviation Metric, have consistently chronicled his visionary reforms as benchmark models for safety management across emerging markets.

Beyond public service, Olateru’s entrepreneurial vision remains anchored in OmniBlu Aviation Limited, an organisation he founded in 2013. Built on his philosophy of delivering “beyond first class” business aviation solutions, OmniBlu was established to address a critical market demand for premium charter and specialised air transport services.

Under his stewardship, OmniBlu has consistently set benchmarks for safety, uncompromising regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency across multiple commercial sectors.
