NiMet workers petition Tinubu, Keyamo over poor salary structure

Some workers of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) have written to President Bola Ahmed, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo and the Secretary to the Federal Government over the significant salary disparity between NiMet staff and their counterparts in the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB).
They noted that the salaries of those of other agencies are more than twice those of NiMet’s grade-level counterparts.
A source very close to the agency told Aviation Metric that aside from that, the workers disclosed that in 2025 other agencies’ employees have started receiving numerous benefits, such as clothing allowances among other benefits, lamenting that the disparity is not only demoralizing but also undermines the critical role NiMet plays in ensuring aviation safety and national security.
Accurate and timely meteorological information, they reiterated is the backbone of safe aviation operations, adding that without precise weather reports, air navigation becomes significantly compromised, increasing the risk of flight disruptions, incidents, and potential national security threats.
“Every aircraft that takes off and lands safely does so based on the reliability of our weather intelligence. Despite the vital nature of our work, NiMet staff continue to face economic hardship due to inadequate remuneration.”
The reality of staff working under financial strain according to them is concerning, as it could impact overall efficiency and safety in the aviation sector.
They urged urgent action to be taken to ensure fair compensation that reflects the significance of our responsibilities.
“We call upon the leadership to address this pressing issue and advocate for a just resolution. Ensuring the well-being of NiMet staff is not just a matter of fairness but a critical investment in national safety and security.”
Meanwhile, the agency has announced plans to release the 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) on February 4.
This year’s theme, “The Role of Early Warnings towards a Climate-Resilient Aviation Industry for Sustainable Socio-Economic Development,” underscores the importance of proactive measures in mitigating climate impacts.
NiMet publishes its annual predictions of climatic variables, including rainfall and temperature patterns, during the first quarter of the year.
This initiative aligns with its mandate to provide critical guidance to the government and public on weather, climate, and water-related matters.
According to the Director General of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike; “The Seasonal Climate Prediction highlights vital weather and climate information that may affect socio-economic activities in the following sectors during the year; agriculture, aviation, disaster risk management, health, oil & gas, telecommunication, tourism, transport (Water and Land), power (hydro and renewable), water resources management, etc.
“The socioeconomic implications of the expected rainfall and temperature patterns for some sectors of the economy are also presented in the publication”.
The forecast information provided in the SCP document includes the onset and cessation dates of the 2025 rainy season; the length of the cropping season; the total amount of rainfall expected in all the 774 Local Government Areas of the country; temperature (January – May) as well as Malaria and Meningitis vigilance forecast.
The Seasonal Climate Prediction document is a national document and the public presentation attracts guests from the public and private sectors, development partners, non-governmental organizations, the diplomatic community, farmers associations, etc.
Keyamo will perform the presentation of the publication alongside its summary for policymakers and translations in three major Nigerian languages, and State of the Climate in Nigeria.

Seriously speaking, we the Nimet staff are suffering and smiling despite the essential duty we Carry out in the aviation sector. We are the elephant when it comes to work but we eat like worms wen it comes to salary. Imagine a level 4 officer in FAAN, NAMA, NSIB and NCAA earns more than level 8 of the Nigerian meteorological agency staff with the high cost of living. Pls we employ office of the presidency and the minister of the aviation to look into the desperity of the salaries so we can at least take care of the family responsibilities on our shoulders. Thanks

This is a serious case in NiMet. We work towards security ing lived and property of the citizens by providing accurate and timely Weather. Flight operations highly depend on our input. It is demoralizing when minds are not settled while performing our indispensable duties. Government should please look into our matter urgently
It’s so pathetic that we have operational staff that receive as low as 34k as take home. Level 8 salary is not up to 90k. The job is really discouraging.

It is very pathetic that Nimet is through this. Looking at the critical services provided by the agency on daily besis it is carlous in the part of the government to allow its staff in this degree of perpetual poverty. It is high time proper things are done to ameliorate this situation.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) is tasked with providing critical weather forecasts and warnings to support the country’s economic development and disaster risk reduction efforts. However, behind the scenes, NiMet staff are struggling to make ends meet due to poor salaries, inadequate staff welfare, and deplorable conditions of services.
NiMet staff are among the lowest-paid government employees in Nigeria. Despite their critical role in providing essential services, they earn a basic salary that is grossly inadequate. Many staff members struggle to pay their rent, feed their families, and cover other basic expenses.
Imagine a NiMet staff collecting 34k as take home at the end of the whole month🙄.
